Scheduling is about to optimize a result from given preferences and requriements. It's well known that it's a complex and time-consuming job, here is an example of how difficult it is:
 

Let's say we have 12 teams and all teams should play against each other twice (2 x round robin). This gives us 479 001 600 different schedules to choose from. It's not an understatement to say its a pretty big challenge for the human brain to find the schedule that fits your league's specific preferences and requirements best.

For professional sport federations, schedules affect a variety of stakeholders (teams, fans, communities). The schedule quality will affect teams revenue (and federations themselves), as television networks are willing to pay higher broadcasting rights depending on whether the schedule meets certain requirements (e.g. games that attract larger audiences are scheduled on ‘better’ dates). Fans also often decide whether to buy tickets based on above reasons. Improved and optimalized schedule can boost attendance.
